However much you look after them, teeth tend to wear down over the years. That process can often lead to cavities, chips, cracks, and other tooth damage. Even so, these facts don’t mean you have to live with a busted or broken-down smile. Our excellent dentists at BGH Dental will gladly give you dental crowns at our Greenfield location. To learn more about these unique caps, keep reading or book a visit and chat with us in person.

A dental crown is a small cap that fits over a weak tooth, protecting (and sometimes hiding) the treated site. Each covers a damaged area with a durable material like porcelain, zirconia, gold, etc. A crown will thus stop harmful bacteria and other debris from reaching the vulnerable spot.

Due to the traits above, the best candidates for dental crowns have some form of tooth damage. Such damage could be a cracked or broken tooth or an unfillable cavity. Teeth eroded by a grinding habit or that’ve had root canals also benefit from crowns.

All that said, the proper way to confirm your candidacy is to consult our dentists. They’ll closely assess your tooth (or teeth) to see if dental crown treatment suits you.

When done the traditional way, a dental crown treatment takes two dental visits. Our team spends the first appointment prepping your tooth (or teeth) for its restoration(s). Some weeks later, we’ll place the final dental crown(s) at a follow-up visit.

Our team will ready your mouth for its crown on the first visit. To do so, we’ll shave off some enamel from the treated area. We’ll then make an impression of the prepped tooth and send it to a dental lab, which will use the impression to craft your final crown. This crafting takes a few weeks, so you’ll wear a temporary restoration while you wait.

You’ll attend the follow-up visit once your dental crown is ready. At that point, placing the cap won’t take long; it should be a short and painless process. Our dentists will just set the crown in place and make minor changes to ensure a good fit. Once we’ve polished the cap so it’s nice and shiny, we’ll send you on your way!

If you prefer a quicker treatment method, ask about our CEREC same-day crowns. These kinds can be crafted in-house while you wait!

Once your tooth has its own dental crown, you’ll enjoy benefits like:

  • Lifelike Looks – When it uses ceramic or porcelain, a dental crown can match the shade of your other teeth. That means it’ll blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
  • Tooth Protection – A placed dental crown protects your tooth from bacteria and withstands the force of your bite. So, it keeps you from needing a root canal or tooth extraction later.
  • Versatile Care –  A dental crown covers the entire visible portion of your tooth. As a result, it can treat cavities, chips, fractures, and more.
  • Long Lifespan – When given the proper care, a dental crown can last 15 years or more.
