Why would me dentist recommend a deep cleaning? With so much information emerging about the connections between your oral health and your overall health, we know that it’s never been more important to take charge of your oral health. We now understand that periodontal (gum) disease has a direct link with other health concerns in the body such as cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Your preventative care appointments are your first line of defense against issues such as gum disease, since we screen you for it at every checkup. Learn more here about why your dentist would recommend a deep cleaning.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Gum disease is essentially an infection of the bone and soft tissues that surround and support your teeth. It occurs when excessive plaque buildup causes your gums to separate from your teeth and allows harmful bacteria below the gum line. When this is your condition, your dentist will recommend a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing, that reaches below the gum line to remove plaque and tartar build up.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease when you may notice that your gums appear red and swollen, or they bleed when you brush. Chronic bad breath that doesn’t go away is also a telltale sign of gingivitis. Take heed of these warning signs because it’s in this phase that your gum disease can be successfully managed with a thorough cleaning and improved home care. It may even be reversed in some cases.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease, when most of the damage starts to occur. In this stage, the infection has begun to destroy your bone and gum tissue, eliminating the support system for your teeth and putting you at risk for tooth loss. Did you know that periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in American adults?

This stage of gum disease requires a deeper cleaning, antibiotic therapy, and surgery in some cases. Because there’s no cure for gum disease, we recommend that you come in for professional cleanings more often so we can help you successfully keep it at bay.

At Bagley, Goodwin & Hrinda PC, our highly skilled doctors and hygienists are well equipped to help you manage any stage of gum disease you may be facing. Contact our office today to learn more about gum disease and schedule your next appointment. Your health is too important to risk!
